very insightful piece. thank you for letting us know what freelancing for you is like, long may the big jobs continue, Chelsea has banned floral foam, hopefully wont be long until all the others catch on :)
Thank you. Business is cutting back on costly florals, but yes hopefully some will continue. Yes hoorah for foam free, my pet push! Time and education will convert all eventually!
This was such an interesting read! I don’t have much experience freelancing, but I can see the benefits. What a great way to learn different mechanics and skills, without the anxiety of wondering if it will work!
Thank you Kasannah. Freelancing is exactly that. I really enjoy bonding with all the girls. We all think alike regardless of age.
I’ve asked my Fox & Rabbit boss if she’d be interested in approaching our State Art Gallery to see if they’re interested in running Art in Bloom. You and Nan inspired me to look into it!
I love that floristry is so multigenerational! I have relationships with other florists and growers that are aged anywhere between late 20s and early 60s. It’s incredible.
Oh I love that you’ve asked to do Art in Bloom! It was the best - creatively challenging, enjoyable, community focused. I really hope you’re able to do it! And if it doesn’t end up becoming an event, I’m sure you could do it on a small scale with some florists friends. Visit the gallery together, each pick a painting and draw one at random, go back to your studio and create an arrangement!
Thank you Olwen. Like any career, unless you work in it, most people wouldn’t really know what you do. Yes! It’s very rewarding when you see happy clients.
Hard relate to all of this!! I've definitely relied on freelancing too much because I've not been as bold as I should with putting myself and my services out there. But you just learn so much and I love a good gossip whilst I'm working, so freelancing definitely appeals haha.
Thank you Sarah. It’s a balance isn’t it? Freelancing is a terrific fallback. It works for me as I can’t book in too many events in advance due to travel. But I too would like a few more of my small events too!

I think it is an art which spends the ages.
Great idea! I’m sure between my boss and I we can make it happen.

Such an interesting behind the scenes! And as always, love the photos of your work. To be surrounded by flowers…
Thank you, Yes I can't really complain!
